Touch Screen Technology – How Is It Being Used?
Aug 8, 2010 Tech News
The touch screen is arguably the easiest PC interface to use. It is therefore no surprise that it is the interface of choice for a wide range of applications. Below are some examples of how touch screens are being used in society today:
Public Information Displays – The primary reason behind the increase in use of touch screen displays is simply due to the ease of use they offer. People of an older generation, who maybe have had no real experience with computers, can quickly work out how to use them and find the information they need easily. Public information displays come in the form of information kiosks, trade show displays, tourism displays, and many others.
Retail Systems – It is common knowledge that time is money in the business world, and that is especially so in the fast paced retail environment. As touch screen systems are easy to use and efficient, employees can complete tasks faster, and the amount of time needed for training time can be significantly reduced. Also, as only a screen is needed to input, valuable counter space is saved. Touch screens can be used for, amongst other things, cash registers, order entry stations and seating / reservation systems.
Customer Self-Service – It is a fact that nobody likes waiting in line or queuing for things, and it is a problem that can be overcome by using touch screens. Self-service touch screen terminals are being used to improve customer service at stores, restaurants and transportation hubs. ATMs and airline e-ticket terminals are other examples of self-service stations that often use touch screens. Customers can complete transactions themselves; saving them time and allowing them to get on with their day.
Computer Training – As touch screen interfaces are more user-friendly than other types of input devices, training time for computer novices can be significantly reduced. They also help to make the learning process more fun and interactive. Studies have shown that courses that involve large parts of touch screen computer training are more popular with students than courses which do not make use of the technology.
Assistive Technology – Assistive technology in the form of touch screen systems like on screen keyboards are extremely helpful for people who have difficulties in using a keyboard or mouse. This technology can increase the availability of computer resources to these people, making their lives a little bit easier.
Industrial And Manufacturing – Touch screen systems are widely used in industrial processes such as part and product manufacturing. The visual communication of data and ease of use greatly increases the efficiency of data input, plus operations can be monitored and modified in real-time.
